Hi, my name is Niamh Herbert, along with my friend Laura Beston, I have founded a charity called ‘Disability and I’. Our objective is to provide awareness to the people of Ireland about the different disabilities here in our society, and to provide a platform for the advocacy of rights for people with disabilities. This is an area in which Laura and I are both very interested. Laura and I both live with different types of disability, and so we both a have a personal insight into the treatment of disabilities and the people with disabilities here in Ireland. The idea behind ‘Disability and I’ is that it’s a platform for people with disabilities, by people with disabilities.
One day, I discovered that Ireland is the only EU member to not have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This means that Irish people with disabilities are without basic rights in their own country.I knew that Laura would be interested in this, so we organised to discuss it over a cup of coffee. And the idea of ‘Disability and I‘ was born!
At first we were angry that our government isn’t taking action and everything felt so futile, but now we’re just so determined to help and make a difference in any way that we can. Living with the different illnesses that we have, we see a real lack of disability awareness and advocacy, and so we decided to take the idea of raising awareness and run with it.
We really really appreciate all of the help and support from our friends and family in the past month or so. Things will only get better from here on out!
