Introducing: Niamh

Hi, my name is Niamh Ní Hoireabhaird, along with my friend Laura Beston, I have founded a campaign called ‘Disability and IOur objective is to provide awareness to the people of Ireland about the different disabilities here in our society, and to provide a platform for the advocacy of rights for people with disabilities. This is an area in which Laura and I are both very interested. Laura and I both live with different types of disability, and so we both a have a personal insight into the treatment of disabilities and the people with disabilities here in Ireland. The idea behind ‘Disability and I’ is that it’s a platform for people with disabilities, by people with disabilities.

One day, I discovered that Ireland is the only EU member to not have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.  I knew that Laura would be interested in this, so we met up to discuss it over a cup of coffee. And the idea of ‘Disability and I’ was born!

At first we were angry that our government isn’t taking action and everything felt so futile, but now we’re just so determined to help and make a difference in any way  that we can.  Living with the different illnesses that we have, we see a real lack of disability awareness and advocacy, and so we decided to take the idea of raising awareness and run with it.

*** Update! 24 March 2018:

I started this blog last year as a part of a campaign that my friend, Laura Beston, and I were running in our college. We had great success with the campaign, but as summer rolled in and I started an internship in the European Parliament, the blog lost momentum and got pushed to the back of my mind.

Since then, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to get back into disability activism. I found constantly focussing on the hardships of having a disability to be emotionally draining, and although I know that = I was helping the progression of a more accessible and disability friendly world, I really felt that something was missing.

I’ve always loved writing and I decided to put that passion to good use and use this blog to tell the stories I want to tell.

I want to tell the untold stories of those with disabilities and what makes us the people we are.

I hope you enjoy reading!
